LM3915 & LM3916 Logarithmic Display Drivers
The LM3915 and LM3916 are monolithic integrated circuits designed to sense analog voltage levels and drive 10 LEDs, providing a logarithmic analog display. These ICs eliminate the need for microcontrollers or complex programming, offering a rugged and fast-responding alternative to conventional meters. While the LM3915 is a standard logarithmic driver where each LED represents a 3dB step, the LM3916 is specifically tailored for audio applications with a VU scale.
Key Features
Logarithmic Display: The LM3915 increments LEDs by one step for every 3dB rise, monitoring up to 30dB with 10 LEDs.
Selectable Modes: Supports both Dot mode (single LED active) and Bar mode (all LEDs below a certain point active), selectable via Pin 9.
Programmable Current & Voltage: Reference voltage and LED sink current (1mA to 30mA) are easily programmed using external resistors.
Expandability: Multiple ICs can be cascaded to monitor signals up to 70dB or 90dB using 30 or more LEDs.
Wide Operating Range: Operates on a single supply from 3V to 25V and can drive LEDs, LCDs, or vacuum fluorescents.
